Open Source Development Lab（OSDL）に新CEOが誕生

今朝発表されたプレスリリースによれば、Open Source Development Lab（ OSDL ）はこのたび新しいCEOを指名した（全文は下記）。ラボ ディレクタの Tim “wookie”‘ Witham は現在のポジションに残り、今後も引き続き技術窓口の代表を務める。新CEOのStuart Cohenは、企業へのLinux普及活動に専念することになる。我々は先週の金曜に、ごく短時間ながらCohenとAIMチャットをする機会を得た。Cohenはあまり多くを語らなかったが、就任後まだ数日しか経っていないことを考えれば無理もないだろう。しかし、この重要なLinux/オープンソース団体の新しい「顔」の人となりを紹介する意味を込めて、チャットの内容を掲載しておく。

NewsForge: 今までは、「プロフェッショナルな」オープンソース支援運動というものはほとんどありませんでしたが、これはOSDLの使命の1つではないでしょうか?

Cohen: 我々はGlobal 2000企業［へのLinux普及活動］に照準を合わせています［編集部注：「Global 2000」とは世界のトップ2000社のこと］。我々が案件についてのエキスパートや提唱者になることで、結果的に、そうした企業がLinuxにより大きな投資をしてくれるようになると信じています。

NewsForge: OSDLは既にかなり充実したスポンサー陣を擁しています。これからもスポンサー探しに力を入れるつもりですか?

NewsForge: OSDLのWebサイトの「Corporate Sponsors」（企業スポンサー情報）のページには、「スポンサー契約料金は年間10,000ドルから」と書かれていますが、これは小さな企業にとっては高額すぎませんか?

Cohen: Linuxに関心を持っていて、OSDLの会員になりたいと考えている企業にとってこれが障害になっているという話は聞いたことがありませんが、まだ就任して日が浅いので何とも言えません。

NewsForge: そうですか。これからスタッフ、特にマーケティングスタッフを増やしていくのでしょうか?

OSDL selects veteran IBM networking and RadiSys telecommunications executive Stuart Cohen for top job

BEAVERTON, OR, April 21, 2003 – OSDL, a global consortium of leading technology companies dedicated to accelerating the adoption of Linux in enterprise computing, today announced that Stuart F. Cohen has been named Chief Executive Officer. Cohen brings more than 22 years of computer industry business development, sales and marketing experience to OSDL, along with a proven track record of achieving consistent, sustainable growth and market leadership for the organizations he has led.

“Stuart understands the importance and promise of Linux to enterprise customers, open source developers and our sponsors at OSDL,” said Ross Mauri, Vice President Development, IBM Systems Group and President of the OSDL Board of Directors. “His front-line experience with data center customers at IBM and his telecommunications industry business development experience at RadiSys give him a unique and valuable perspective to advance the mission of OSDL and build upon our current success.”

According to market research firm IDC, Linux is expected to be the fastest-growing category in operating system environment revenue over the next five years, with a compound annual growth rate of 28 percent.

In accepting the appointment to CEO, Cohen set three major goals for OSDL:

• Continue and expand OSDL’s leadership role in championing Linux-based development projects for business-critical applications.

Prior to joining OSDL, Cohen was Vice President of Marketing and Business Development and a corporate officer at RadiSys Corporation where his responsibilities included strategic partnership development. Before that he served as Vice President of Worldwide Marketing and as a corporate officer at InFocus Corporation. His industry experience includes 17 years with IBM where he held senior positions in sales and marketing at the personal computer and networking divisions, including international experience in Europe, Southeast Asia and China.
